Answer: My brother’s sarcastic guess of “Stalin” or “Lenin” was not as far off as he might have thought: Sasha’s given name is Natasha. Clearly the Obamas named her not after a former Soviet leader but a former Soviet spy: Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. (Interestingly, “Sasha” is usually a nickname for a different Russian name, Alexandra.)
